It’s a very hot October, so cool off in Reps Theatre, where the air conditioning unit is fully operational again, thanks to Mike Blackburn and colleagues. It’s also time to enjoy a chilled drink in the Reps bar …or on the Tada Terrace, a really great venue for sundowners on your way home of an evening.

Hairspray takes centre stage

The delightful musical Hairspray is now in its final week on the Reps main stage and is highly recommended as a fun show that will leave audiences feeling good. There’s a wealth of talent in the show, including a number of newcomers to the Reps stage. It runs until Saturday October 27 and ticket prices range from $6 to $15, depending on where you sit. All information on booking and ticket prices available from The Spotlight as always.

The storyline is about a young girl in 1962 Baltimore who wants to change the world for the better through song and dance …and as always happens in the movies, she wins through in the end! The show is directed by Zane Lucas and Sue Bolt and has a huge cast of singers and dancers.

Zane Lucas recovering at home

As many members know, our Director of Productions, Zane E Lucas, took ill a couple of months ago and has been on extended sick leave at home. He handed over production of Hairspray to Sue Bolt and has been in the very caring hands of housemates and friends for some time He is now recovering slowly but surely. On a programme of medication, good eating and exercise, he is getting back into shape and we all look forward to having back in the office and helming his shows sooner rather than later. He has been down twice to watch Hairspray and it was great to see him up and about. All members join in wishing Zane well and getting him back into his busy and active routine!

Membership net must be cast wider … and you can help!

Membership of Reps continues to grow (though not as quickly as we would like!). As a member, you know that there are friends and colleagues of yours missing out. We are in the last three months of the year, so anyone joining now only has to pay for the last quarter subs, as well as the small joining fee. We are already looking forward to 2013 and the many good times coming for members then. Benefits are many …. such as use of the members’ bar; discounts on tickets; new special privileges from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and National Trust of Zimbabwe, discounts on meals at Adrienne’s Restaurant.

Speaking of discounts, it is interesting to see how few of us use our member's discount on tickets for Reps Main Stage shows. Remember that this is an excellent way to set up a social evening with your mates. Sign them in for a drink before the show, buy discounted tickets for the show, and stay for a few more afterwards. All at reduced cost because you are a member. And who knows, your family and friends may see what they are missing and you can have them sign up as new members … and everyone wins!

It has been exciting to watch the interest in Reps in the social media (Facebook and Twitter) among Reps members and friends. If you haven't done so already, "friend" us at www.facebook.com/RepsTheatre and follow us at www.twitter.com/RepsTheatre.

Reprobates are heavily involved

Most Reprobates are involved in shows at the moment, including Hairspray, Peter Pan and Six Shades of Awkward. Consequently the weekly meetings are on hold for the next few weeks but a notice will be sent out once Reprobates resumes meetings.

Preps get ready for end-of-year show

Preps activities for the third term are well under way but there is still enough time for parents to bring future stars to join in the fun. The children have already come up with many ideas for their end-of-term play and it promises to be a fun and interesting show. More info from David Bvumbe through the Reps office.

Crew wanted!

Hairspray is up and running - what a fantastic set and lighting design for this show. We are looking for crew for the Panto and the New Year show, so anyone interested in working on these shows should please contact the Backstage team through the Reps office. We are also organising a DMX lighting course in December so please let us know if you are interested in attending (places for this will be limited, so get in early).

Social events coming up

Monday October 29 … wine tasting hosted by Latilla Wines (pre-book through aquarius@iwayafrica.co.zw) on the Tada Terrace ($5 per person); Friday November 9 … Dean Jones sings in the members’ bar; Friday November 16 … Mande Snyman sings and Kevin Hanssen plays sax in the members’ bar; Sunday November 18 … November fun pub quiz, with quiz host Judy Macdonald, coming to Reps for the first time!

Did you know …

… that Millie the cat has really settled in well at Reps and has become popular among many cast members of shows as the resident stage door moggy. Philippa in the Reps office has kindly taken control of her overseeing and feeds her regularly. She has become a good ratter and helps keep down the rather large rat population in the area. Initially very timid she has become very friendly and often visits members in the bar area and foyer, but is most comfortable with cast and crew of shows backstage. Please remember to help with the feeding by bringing down cat food for Philippa to set aside and use! Millie has a black and white friend who has joined the Reps family and is already quite friendly and allows herself to be picked up and petted. She is today being spayed and vaccinated but she needs a name – any suggestions?

Until next time

Keep well
