Greetings from Reps as July heads towards August – and the end of winter. As always, Reps has been a hive of activity onstage and off stage and one of the great things has been a surge in applications for membership, which boosts our numbers and shows that what Reps offers is in demand. It's important for all members to be reminded that each and every one of us can help Reps by signing up new members – be they family, friends or colleagues. Membership forms can be sourced from the office, Spotlight, bar or website.

Leading Ladies is an hilarious treat

Zane Lucas has staged a delightful production on the Main Stage during July: Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies. It's a tale about two out-of-work actors who hear of a rich old lady who is trying to find two long-lost relatives to whom she can leave her millions … and they try their luck with very funny results. If you have not yet seen this production you are missing out on one of the best and funniest plays to be staged in years, straight on the back of another great success with last month's Table Manners in Theatre Upstairs.

Zoran Zec and Musa Saruro lead a very competent cast in this hilarious romp. Leading Ladies ends its run on Saturday July 21, so grab the chance to see this entertaining piece of theatre while you can. As always, book through The Spotlight.

Dance takes centre stage

Dance will be the focus on the Main Stage in the coming fortnight, with the Dance Trust's Pocahontas running from July 25 to 28, followed by Backstage Onstage the following week, the latter featuring dancers from three top studios. Booking for these shows is already open at The Spotlight and they are going to be highly entertaining, not only for dance fans but for everyone who enjoys a great piece of family entertainment.

Remembering Marilyn

August 5 is the 50th anniversary of the death of the screen legend Marilyn Monroe and Reps is hosting a unique festival to commemorate this occasion. From Monday July 30 to Sunday August 5 Theatre Upstairs will present six of Marilyn's best films and one film about her – the latter being 2011's acclaimed My Week With Marilyn (the title from which we have taken the commemorative week's own running name). The films are

  1. Bus Stop,
  2. There's No Business Like Show Business,
  3. The Seven Year itch,
  4. The Prince and the Showgirl,
  5. Some like It Hot,
  6. and
  7. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
– all great hits and all major successes for the blond bombshell who ruled the screen from the late 40s to 1962. The final film tells the story of a young man interacting with the great star when she made The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier and was Oscar-nominated earlier this year.

Tickets for the films are $9 each or $42 for a season ticket. Reps will probably be the only local venue promoting this anniversary and this festival will be a treat for all fans and for people who have yet to make her celluloid acquaintance. To add to the fun, there will be a social tie-in in the members' bar on Weds Aug 1 (with a meal before the 7pm screening) and again on Sun Aug 5 (after the 6pm screening). It seems a lot of people will be coming to this, judging by calls made and e-mails sent in since the first notice went out, so advance booking at The Spotlight is recommended.

Audition this weekend for the schools play

John Dennison will follow up his 2011 success Much Ado About Nothing with another play for O Level students this year – William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. An audition will be held on Sunday July 22 (2.30pm) and everyone's invited to try out for a part. A large cast is needed, especially males, so please think about being in this stimulating production, which will run on the Main Stage in September, just after schools open. An exercise is already under way to get schools to book for this production, and a special booking price has been arranged for schools wanting to send their students along, as happened with last year's Shakespeare play. Booking for Julius Caesar is already open at The Spotlight.

Coming up in the members' bar

There's a continuing series of great events coming up in the bar, news about which can be sourced through the weekly Tuesday e-flier and through notices in the foyer, in the bar and on the office notice board. However, among the events coming up is the latest Weakest Link (6pm on Sunday July 22 – come along to be in it or just to enjoy watching it) and a new feature, a Bingo evening on Monday July 23. Many of our social events are open to non-members, so you can invite guests or encourage other people to come along and acquire a day visitor card. Opening these events has helped us gain many new members, as people come along see what fun it is to be e Reps member! Members should also remember that on Friday nights there are free snacks, a happy hour and a draw for a cash prize, based on a lucky selection of a membership number done by the computer. The popular monthly quiz is going to be an evening one in August, as some people have asked for a night quiz for a change, so Tuesday August 21 will be the month's pub quiz, then it's back to a daytime one in September.

Reps website is an essential guide

Members should make use of the Reps website to get more information about what's happening in and around Reps, and we would like members to encourage other people to know the site and make use of it, too. It's sourced at www.reps.co.zw and is run for us by Mark Hyde. Visit it regularly and give us feedback on what you would like to see on it, if not already loaded.

Bar screens give space to advertisers

The bar screens in the members' bar is a great place to advertise products and services and for only $35 a month an ad can be placed that is seen many times every day. Ursula Gripper is selling the space and she can be contacted at ursulagripper@gmail.com for more information or to ask her to come along and give you all the info you need to make a decision.

The cats are in care

Response to our appeal for support for the theatre's newly-adopted cats, Spike and Millie (named by Philippa Johnston!), has been good and thank you to the people who have given and continue to give food. The cats were captured by Philippa and shipped off to the vet and have been neutered and vaccinated. Spike is very friendly but Millie is a little shy of people but they both enjoy the food we give them … but only enough to ensure they don't give up their day job, which is catching the many rats who seem to enjoy their visits to Reps, too. Keep the support coming through and get your donations of food to Philippa, please.

Gala nights are always available

Some of our members did not know about gala nights … so here's a guide. Gala nights can be taken up by anyone or any organisation for any of our shows. Most gala nights are held for purposes of fundraising, while some are simply events for social interaction and entertaining. If you would like to book a gala night for any upcoming show, contact Philippa in the Reps office and she can advise what's involved. A special price is given, which enables the organisers to charge their own fee and so make income for themselves. It is usual for organisers to offer complimentary wine and snacks to their guests, which helps differentiate between these gala occasions and ordinary performances. Anyone can do it and it's a fun way to make money for causes. While most people prefer galas at musical shows, they can in fact be held at any production, whether on the Main Stage or in Theatre Upstairs.

Looking for TFMs and Life Members

Some of the Theatre Foundation Members and Life Members on our membership list have not been in communication with us for quite a while and we have lost contact altogether, so we would like to start checking up on their whereabouts, so we can update our database information. We ask anyone who can assist with identifying contact details or whereabouts of the following (not a complete list but one to help us get a start) to do so, please: Mr and Mrs BJ Adelsky; Mr AM Babiolakis; Miss JM Barbour and Miss SF Barbour; Mr DM Barbour; Mr RG Kerswell; Mrs V Le Blanc Smith; Mr J Maltas; Mr M Margolis; Mrs S Margolis; Mr MGB Rooney; Mrs WE Simpson; Mr JW Small; Mr WJM Small; Mr JDE Taylor; Dr GVS Wright.

Did you know …

… that the Club Room (or the upstairs bar, as some people call it) is available to members to hire for private parties? Ryan Lawrence runs this facility, which is used for after-show parties and other events, but which can be hired for a very reasonable fee and is ideal as a venue for parties and social events. The adjoining George Barnes Room is also sometimes available for hire alongside the Club Room, and is useful if people are having meals with their parties, in which case the serving area could beset up in the GB Room. Contact the Reps office for more information on cost and availability.

Until next time, keep well and warm
