News release: May 25 2010: REPSHOWS ONE

Music and drama feature at Harare's Reps Theatre for the next two weeks, with two musical shows on the Reps Main Stage and a gripping drama centered around AIDS in Theatre Upstairs.

Ol' Blue Eyes features the music of Frank Sinatra and the famed Rat Pack and runs from May 25 to 29 on the Main Stage. The show has been directed by Teri Grimmel and stars Dean Jones, Desiree Mostert, Richard Sticklen, Patience Musa and Andre Breytenbach, with musical direction from Rene Mostert. Well-known songs from the famous Sinatra are the mainstay of the show, which was devised by Dean Jones.

Following this on Main Stage will be the annual presentation of light music by the Phoenix and Harare Male Voice choirs, this year entitled Showbiz, and featuring songs from cabarets and stage shows. This runs from June 2 to 5 and features musical; direction from Clive Bishop and Iona Jones. The production is a fundraiser for the choirs' planned UK tour in early 2011.

In Theatre Upstairs George and Shamiso Gukuta star in the drama Are There Tigers In The Congo? This production focuses on HIV/AIDS and is directed by Per Fosser, who is directing for the first time at Reps but has a long and acclaimed background in theatre in his native Norway.

"All of these shows will have wide appeal and we are pleased that in the continuing celebration of the 50th anniversary of Reps Theatre and 80th anniversary of The Repertory Players, we are able to host imaginative and innovative productions," said a spokesman for Reps.

All three show are now booking at The Spotlight.

Also in rehearsal at Reps is The Importance Of Being Earnest, Zane E Lucas' treatment of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy of manners, which will run on the Reps Main Stage from June 23 to July 2. This production features Anne Fischer, Kevin Hanssen, Jason Linforth, Erin Cooper, Richard Sticklen, Leila Billing and Rudi Basson.

This will be followed by Mitzi Carruthers' annual dance spectacular, which will run through July and now also in rehearsal stage.
