NEWS RELEASE: DECEMBER 15, 2010: REPS AWARDS ONE

Five of Harare's most popular actors and three successful local actresses lead the nominations for the 2010 Reps Afdis Awards, winners of which will be announced at a ceremony at Harare's Reps Theatre on February 26.

The Reps Afdis Awards, sponsored by Africa Distillers, are given out each year to members of The Repertory Players and are based on performances, backstage work and other aspects of the theatre's everyday life during the year under review. The 2010 awards cover the year starting January 1 and include nominations and winners in 18 categories, including special awards given to people for dedicated service.

In the Best Actor category, Martin Bolt has been nominated for his performance in the comedy 'Allo 'Allo, while Stephane Thomas receives his first nomination in this category for his performance as Snoopy in Snoopy The Musical. Other nominees in this category are Kevin Hanssen, with two nominations (The Mousetrap and Miss Julie) and George Gukuta (Are There Tigers In The Congo?).

Best actress nominees are Fiona Garrity (Hay Fever), Jamie McLaren (Miss Julie) and Shamiso Gukuta (Are There Tigers In The Congo?).

All Reps productions during the year are put forward as nominees for Best Production and the 2010 shows were: Flying Circusssises, 50 Golden Years, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Seasons In The Sun, Hay Fever, Snoopy The Musical, The Mousetrap, Babysitting Calvin, Are There Tigers In The Congo? Postal Orders, Sins Of The Father, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 'Allo 'Allo, Babes In The Wood and Miss Julie.

Directors of these productions are automatically put forward as nominees for Best Director and they are Linda Hyde (Flying Circusssisses), Sue Bolt (50 Golden Years and 'Allo 'Allo), Kevin Hanssen (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead), Stan Higgins (Seasons In The Sun), Zane E Lucas (Hay Fever), Colleen Hardy (Babysitting Calvin), Teri Grimmel (Snoopy The Musical and Joseph), Per Fosser (Are There Tigers In The Congo and Miss Julie), Michelle Mesley (Postal Orders), Tim Garrard (Sins Of The Father) and Graham Crutchley (Babes In The Wood).

Separate categories are set up for Best Props and Best Stage Manager and all the people involved in these roles for the nominated shows go forward in these categories. In addition to categories in which there are nominations, three special awards are given for service to Reps Theatre and The Repertory Players. These are not based on nominations but are the choice of the judges for the year.

Trophies will also be given out at the ceremony for the 2010 Reps Afdis Schools Festival and for the Repteens Awards, which are for members of the Repteens group - Reps' 12-to-19 age group.

Kyla Render (The Mousetrap), Erin Cooper (Snoopy The Musical), Karen Howard-Beard ('Allo 'Allo), Thea Cutler (Hay Fever) and Collina Mvududu (Miss Julie).
Best minor performance
Roger Fairlie ('Allo 'Allo), Blessing Fire (Joseph), Josh Ansley (Joseph), and Craig du Preez (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead).
Best junior performance (under-12s)
Amy Bolt (Babes In The Wood).
Best comedy performance
Michael Thomas (Snoopy The Musical), Larry Greeff (two - Babysitting Calvin and 'Allo 'Allo), Alex Fairlie (two - Allo 'Allo and Flying Cicusssisses), Richard Sticklen (Snoopy The Musical), and Ryan Lawrence (50 Golden Years).
Most outstanding musical performance
Kirby Chipembere (Joseph) and Dean Jones (Seasons In The Sun).
Best technical award
Tim Garrard (set design of 'Allo 'Allo), Sue McLaren (décor of Babes In The Wood), Munya Magwaro (set design and décor of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead) and Tracy Garrard (sound design of Snoopy The Musical).
Best first performance on the Reps stage
Danielle Connolly ('Allo 'Allo), Anne Stack (Snoopy The Musical),Roger Fairlie ('Allo 'Allo), Zoran Zec (Joseph), Kirby Chipembere (Joseph) and Nicola Kinnaird (flying Circusssisses).
Best contribution to dance and movement
June Cloete (Seasons In The Sun), Blessing Fire (Joseph) and Mitzi Carruthers (Joseph).
