NEWS RELEASE SEPTEMBER 24 2007 SHAKESPLAY ONE

An abridged version of King Lear and excerpts from another three Shakespearean plays feature in a new production from Reps Theatre running in early October.

Brush Up Your Shakespeare will be produced by Reps but performed on the open-air stage at the National Ballet Centre adjacent to the Reps car park. It will feature an abridged version of King Lear, which is an A Level set book at schools this year, as well as excerpts from Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet.

The production is directed by Linda Hyde, who is encouraging schools to ensure their students see it, not only because of the inclusion of King Lear, but because so many Shakespeare dramas are studied at various examination levels.

A large cast will perform in the production, including such well-known personalities as John Dennison, seen recently in Hunting Cockroaches in Theatre Upstairs, as well as a number of newcomers to dramatic productions.

Brush Up Your Shakespeare will run from Wednesday October 3 to Sunday October 7, with performances at 7pm, except for Saturday, when the performance will start at 4pm.

"We have taken advantage of the open-air stage in place at the National Ballet Centre for the Starlight Dancing season, and decided it would be a great idea to stage the production in this way," said Ms Hyde, whose last production was the Flanders and Swann tribute, At The Drop Of A Hat, at new year.

Booking is now open at The Spotlight and tickets will also be available at the gate before each performance. Schools can contact the Reps office to find out about special arrangements for student groups.
