NEWS RELEASE: JUNE 18 2007: FIDDLER ONE

One of the most popular musicals seen on the stage at Harare’s Reps Theatre has been revived, with Fiddler On The Roof makes a welcome return to the local entertainment scene.

The show tells the story of a family in pre-revolutionary Russia and contains a memorable song list, including such well-known numbers as Tradition. Matchmaker, Sunrise,Sunset and If I Were A Rich Man. It was first performed during the 1970s, when John Keeling took the lead role of Tevye, the head of a Jewish family in the village of Anatevka. This was followed by a second production in the 1980s, when Brian Cooper took the lead.

In its latest version, the show stars accomplished local performers Mike Lanchester and Fiona Garrity and a large cast that includes a number of newcomers to the Reps stage, as well as a selection of familiar faces, including Sue Bolt, Josh Ansley, Dean Raybould and Nigel Hopkins. Musical direction is undertaken by Meg McKenzie, who has assembled a large orchestra for the show, while Ryan Lawrence has undertaken the choreography.

“As a popular show, we believe this revival appeals to a large number of people who have seen previous productions or the memorable film made in the 1970s and starring Topol as Tevye, and it will also be of great interest to a whole new generation who do not know this delightful story,” said Teri Grimmel, director of the production.

Fiddler On The Roof is based on stories written by Sholom Alacheim and was first staged in New York in the 1960s. Since then it has enjoyed worldwide acclaim and is about to undergo a revival both in London’s West End and on Broadway.

The Reps production will run until Saturday June 30. Showtimes will be 7pm each night Tuesday to Saturday, except this Saturday, June 23, when there will be a matinee at 2.30pm and no evening performance. Booking is at The Spotlight and ticket prices have been set at $120 000, with a pensioner’s price of $50 000 throughout the run.

The Spotlight now has new opening times: Tuesdays to Fridays from 9am to 4pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 12 noon.
