A dark comedy featuring a strong cast and intelligent humour will feature at Reps' Theatre Upstairs from August 21 to 25, offering a chance for audiences who like more serious theatre to enjoy a production being seen in Zimbabwe for the first time.
Hunting Cockroaches is the unusual title of the play, written by Janusz Glowacki and starring Jamie McLaren, John Dennison, Jason Linforth and Matthew Trustham. It features a famous Polish actress and her husband, a struggling writer, both of whom are sharing a small apartment on New York's East Side with "a rather aggressive gang of cockroaches."
The couple is visited by an immigration officer, a park bum, an 'affluential couple' and various other characters, as the story unravels into a dark and surrealistic comedy.
The production has been directed by the acting group performing in it, with co-direction from Anne Fisher. It runs in Theatre Upstairs from Tuesday August 21 to Saturday August 25 (7pm each day), with only five performances.
Jamie McLaren is a Zimbabwean at present studying dramatic arts in Canada, while John Dennison is recognised as one of Zimbabwe's finest actors. Jason Linforth and Matthew Trustham are students at St George's College and, in addition to their acting credentials, are perhaps better known as the mime duo Silent Knights.
Booking is open at The Spotlight, which is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 12 noon. Tickets will also be available an hour before the performance starts.
"It is serious theatre with a strong touch of humour and will appeal to the people who enjoy well-written plays," said Ms McLaren.
"It was written in the 1980s but still has relevance today and its fascinating characters offer a remarkable experience to see how other people live and think."
