Reps Theatre's first dramatic production for 2006 will run from May 4 to 13, when The Drawer Boy is staged in Theatre Upstairs.
The play is being directed by Graham Crutchley, recent co-winner of the Oude Meester Award of Excellence for his 2005 production of Proof, which also ran in Theatre Upstairs. It has a cast of three - David Smith, Mike Blackburn and Warwick Broad - and is set in 1970s rural Canada, where two World War 2 veterans living on a farm have their ordered lives thrown into disarray by the arrival of a young newcomer.
Described as a drama with comedy touches, the play was highly acclaimed internationally when it was first produced in 2001 and is well suited to the intimate atmosphere of Theatre Upstairs, which seats only 60 patrons. The production has a short run of only eight performances.
"This play will have appeal to lovers of serious theatre and I am confident our three actors will do full justice to its splendid script," said Mr Crutchley.
David Smith also recently won an award for various performances at Reps during 2005, including Proof, Broadway Hits and Musical Bits and The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾. He has established a strong presence on the local theatrical and entertainment scene during the past two years and this role will give him an added opportunity to highlight his dramatic skills. Mike Blackburn is well known for his work on the stage as well as behind the scenes in Reps productions, while Warwick Broad will be making his Reps debut.
Booking is now open at The Spotlight (open Mondays to Fridays from 10am to 2pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 12 noon).
