The melodies of many great musical productions will feature in Reps Theatre’s first ‘own show’ for 2006, Spirit of the West End Shows, which has a two-night run in early March.
The show is a unique combination of floral design and song, in which well-known florists Barbreanne Linnell and Lorraine Cooke make up floral displays on stage while performers sing. The two soloists in the show are Patrick Barrett and Caroline dos Santos, both of whom are students of one of Zimbabwe’s leading singers and singing teachers, Lorna Kelly.
The theme of the show is London’s West End, home of the stage musical, with the floral displays being interpretations of the shows and their music and the songs also coming from those shows.
Producer Eve Stranix is excited about the unique blend of floral art and music.
“This will appeal to a wide range of audiences and will offer the people on stage a chance to show their interpretation of great shows and great songs,” she said.
Among the productions being incorporated are Jesus Christ Superstar, Mamma Mia, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, We Will Rock You and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Patrick Barrett, who turns 16 just before the show, has appeared in a number of Reps shows during the past 18 months, including Jesus Christ Superstar in 2004 and Boy Band Blockbusters and Godspell in 2005. A Form Four student at St George’s College, he is also one of the founding members of boy band 5Star, which has performed widely in cabarets and concerts in Harare and elsewhere since its formation early last year. In addition to being a singer, he is an accomplished dancer, and has appeared in various National Ballet of Zimbabwe shows.
Caroline dos Santos is also a student of Lorna Kelly and has appeared in a number of concerts organised by Ms Kelly. She is a student at St John’s College and has been singing for about five years.
Musical director of the show is Paul Shephard, a Reps stalwart and new music teacher at St John’s College, who has arranged for the St John’s choir to perform a piece during the Spirit of the West End Shows production. Also working on this production are Tracey Garrard (sound), Sue Bingham (lighting) and Rod Broodryk (stage management).
“There is a huge pool of talent on stage for this show and we are sure it will have a winning mix of artistic creation and entertainment,” said Mrs Stranix.
There will be three performances – Friday March 10 (7pm) and Saturday March 11 (2.30pm and 7pm) and advance bookings can now be made at The Spotlight (open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and Saturday from 10am to 12 noon, as well as one hour before curtains go up.
