Some of Zimbabwe's brightest young singing and dancing talent will be on stage at Harare's Reps Theatre in February to present a musical journey through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
They will be appearing in a show called Top Of The Pops, which will run for only one week - with no chance of extension. Directed by Stan Higgins, with musical direction by Meg Mackenzie and choreography by June Cloete, the show features hits of the era presented by a line-up of 22 singers and 10 dancers.
Songs range from 50s classics like Love Potion No 9 and Why Do Fools Fall In Love? to popular 60s numbers like Bye Bye Love and Obla Di Obla Da through to 70s standards such as Tie A Yellow Ribbon and I Have A Dream.
"It's a wonderful list of songs and we also have a line-up of great young talent, including singers and dancers who have performed in Reps productions before, as well as some exciting newcomers appearing on stage for the first time," said Stan Higgins.
The show can run for only one week as it will move out to make way for this year's Reps Afdis Awards show, Do U Wanna Glam Rock? and another visit to Zimbabwe by legendary South African pop group The Bats.
Booking is now open at The Spotlight, which opens between Tuesday and Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 12 noon. A preview show on Monday February 16 (7pm) has a special discount price for all patrons and free entry for senior citizens' homes - any home wishing to come along should call Erin Cooper at Reps on 335850 or Stan Higgins on 496943.
Opening night will be Tuesday February 17 (7pm), with further evening shows on Wednesday February 18, Thursday February 19, Friday February 20 and Saturday February 21. A matinee performance will be laid on at 2.30pm on Saturday February 21, with special pensioner prices.
"Top Of The Pops will be a fun show and a chance for audiences to enjoy the music of the past and really enjoy themselves, forgetting the troubles of life for an hour or two," said Stan Higgins.
"Within the show will be a little storyline featuring our MCs for the show, award-winning actress Erin Cooper and actor-mime performers Jason Linforth and Matthew Trustham. Singing names include Nigel Hopkins, Jamie Bell, Dean Raybould, Desiree Mostert, Rowland Amm, Fadzisai Gukuta, Innocent Museve and Faith Ganyau, as well as many others. For the dancing, June Cloete has lined up some of her best studio and national dancers, including Natalie Bradbury, a National Ballet soloist."
