NEWS RELEASE SEPTEMBER 3 2008 OLEANNA ONE

A drama written by Pulitzer and Tony award-winning American playwright David Mamet will be staged at Reps Theatre Upstairs during September.

Oleanna is a tense play featuring a professor and his student, whose relationship deteriorates during the course of the performance. The production is directed by Kevin Hanssen, who describes it as being 'in a no-man's land between misunderstanding and sexual harassment."

"We watch with impotent dread as the relationship between professor and student breaks down entirely, as their mutual respect evaporates and an unbridgeable divide opens that can only destroy one or both of them," he said.

Hanssen also acts as the professor in the play, along with Rene Mostert, who portrays the student. During the New York run of the play, audiences became heated and often came to blow with each other afterwards.

Oleanna will run in Theatre Upstairs from Thursday September 11 to Saturday September 20, with performances at 7pm each night except September 15 and 18. Booking is now open at The Spotlight, which operates from 9am to 4pm Tuesdays to Fridays and 9am to 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kevin Hanssen is one of Zimbabwe's leading actors and directors and is also involved in Theory X, which trains actors and other theatre professionals and has staged a number of successful productions in Harare. Rene Mostert is a relative newcomer to the stage and has also been involved in directing.
