NEWS RELEASE JULY 15 2008 STOPPARD ONE

Two Tom Stoppard one-act plays will be staged at Reps' Theatre Upstairs from July 23 to 26, presented as the first production of a workshop group formed within The Repertory Players.

The Reprobates group was created last year to encourage development of acting and other theatrical skills among new and long-standing members of Reps. Under the guidance of Sue Bolt and Greg Mizon, the group is now ready to commit to a public production and is doing the two one-act plays under the title That's Absurd.

Directed by Sue Bolt, the first play is After Magritte, a surreal comedy, while the second, with a larger cast, is The Real Inspector Hound, which presents itself as a parody of crime thrillers, most notably Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, which has been running continuously in London's West End since 1953. Stoppard's well-known wit and sharp skills of observation regarding human frailties feature strongly in both scripts.

"These are delightful comedy plays that will entertain hugely and they give us a chance to showcase new talent coming up through the Reprobates concept, as well as some more experienced performers from within the local theatrical community," said Ms Bolt, who is one of Reps' most experienced actresses.

Both plays feature well-know local actor Tim Harrap - last seen in the murder mystery plays staged last month at Theatre Upstairs and directed by Sue wilkes and Mel Hooley. After Magritte also features Anne Fischer, Jonathan Hall, Vanessa Vos and Ursula Gripper, while in The Real Inspector Hound Mr Harrap is joined by George Gukuta, Adriano Gorassini, Philippa Johnston, Ryan Lawrence, Christina Hall, Karen Howard-Beard, Adam Snape and Natalie Cockroft.

"Within this line-up are new faces, as well as others whose performances to date may not have been in straight plays or who have not been on stage in Harare before," said Ms Bolt.

That's Absurd has a preview showing on Tuesday July 22, and then runs from Wednesday July 23 to Saturday July 26, with 7pm performances each day and an additional matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday July 26. Booking is now open at The Spotlight (open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9am to 4pm and Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 12 noon).
